Red Wing Institute Circular

Red Wing, MN: Red Wing Institute, 1876-1877. A single-fold circular for the Red Wind Institute a private school in Red Wing, MN, in the 19th century which "prepares pupils for college, teaching or business. Instruction thorough. Discipline strict but mild. Both sexes received." The school year was 36 weeks, broken up into three terms; Fall, Winter and Spring, which ran from September to June. Tuition for room and board was $70, with text books provided for free. It was a four year school, which offer courses on (depending on the student's year): arithmetic, US and general history, Latin (focuses on basics then Caesar, Cicero and Virgil), geography, reading, spelling, penmanship, algebra, natural philosophy, physiology, geometry, botany, chemistry, rhetoric, geology, astronomy, English literature, and mental philosophy. Lessons on elocution, book keeping, Greek and piano were provided for an extra fee if requested. The front page of the circular has a black and white engraving of the institute's main building and campus. A list of current faculty has can be found within the circular, and the name of the Classics and Natural Science Professor, Wm. M. Warner, has been handwritten in. Little information was found on the school itself, thought it does show up on other documents, such as a local map, as late as 1880. Single fold, double sided circular. Measures 5 3/4" x 3 1/8" (folded). General wear. Minor penciling (name of professor). Small missing section along top edge of front page, does not effect text.
