Child's Picture Primer. Davis, Porters, Co.Philadelphia.c1865
Child's Picture Primer. Davis, Porters, Co.Philadelphia.c1865
Price: $150.00

16 pp (including covers) This is a primer meant for young children. It starts with the alphabet, printed in upper and lower case, and continues on to numbers and vowels, and eventually from sight words to small sentences, to short descriptions. There are thirteen hand colored engravings (including the cover illustration which is repeated later in the book). There is a rather unusual page towards the beginning of the primer. After the pages of the printed alphabet, but before the page showing numbers and vowels, there is a page of what appears to be random letters. At first glance, one would assume the letters are the consonants, (especially considering that the vowels are on the next page) however, there are several vowels among the letters. Additionally the letters appear to be in a random order. The image depicted on the page is of four Scottish men in kilts, brandishing swords.  OCLC- none (4/20/18).  Measures 10 1/4" x 6 1/2.. Cover and edge wear, particular at the corners. Fabric repair to binding, Toned and soiled due to age. Minor tears on paper's edges. Faint water stain at center of book throughout all pages (see pictures).
Mt. Fuji Trail Stamp Passport Book. .Mt Fuji, Japan.c1926-1951
Mt. Fuji Trail Stamp Passport Book. .Mt Fuji, Japan.c1926-1951
Price: $150.00

This concertina style book holds the trail stamps one can get at the different stations as one hikes Mt. Fuji. There are several different trails on Mt. Fuji, and the stamps featured in this book appear to be  from the Yoshida Trail, though there may be others. The owner of this book reached the highest station, station 10. There are two stamps that indicate this, the first one is located at the end of one side (side A)and states "Sunrise 10 Station, Alt 12,395 feet". The second stamp is located at the end of the other side (Side B)of the book and states "Climber 10 Station, Alt. 12, 365 feet, 1951". This second stamp for Station 10 is the only stamp that is clearly dated. However, there are two stamps also on Side B of the concertina that within the stamp have "26.7.21" and "26.7.22", which might indicate a date of July 21st and July 22, 1926. If these dates are correct then it is likely that this concertina book has stamps from two separate hiking trips up Mt. Fuji, one from 1926 and another from 1951. There are total of 69 stamps in the book, stamped in red, brown, blue and black ink. The majority of these stamps are in Japanese, though a few have English words, such as 'Station No.' or 'Mt. Fuji'. Some of the stamps are rather simplistic with only Japanese characters, though most feature the outline of a mountain in the background. Others are far more detailed, either showing hikers or specific vistas seen from those stations. The most common way to collect these Mt. Fuji 'Station Stamps' are to have them branded on a walking stick. Blue Covers. Measures 4 3/4" x 3 1/2" (folded), 67 3/4" x 4 3/4" (unfolded) To see this item, please click on the following link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/NosLmpnNKyhYxs9UA.

Price: $450.00

Unique ABC concertina book with each letter accompanied by a wood cut, hand colored, illustration of an animal. While most of the animals depicted are quite ordinary, like F for Fox, R for Rabbits, or S for Squirrels, some are quite exotic. For example, I for Ichneumon (northern African mongoose), K for Kangaroo, N for Nyl-Ghau (the largest Asian antelope), O for Ourang-Outang (also known as Orangutans), Q for Quagga (an extinct South American Zebra) and U for Urus (the Germanic name for wild ox). Additionally two that are even stranger than the others are V for Vampyre (sic) which depicts a bat, and X for Xury's Lion. That latter one is a reference to the book "Robinson Crusoe" when the slave boy Xury is scared by a panther (not lion), that was then promptly shot by Crusoe. All the letters, with the exceptions of U, V, Y and Z have their own page, while those four letters have two on a page. Applied litho on board covers. One leaf folded to make 26 pages. OCLC -1  but with stiff paper covers. (Feb 2019.)  Measures 4 3/4" x 3 1/4". .
