And on the back cover, there is an ad for "Fancy Dress Costumes for Masquerade Parties and Entertainments" that lists options for children, women, as well as specific options such as Uncle Sam costumes, colonial costumes, and Santa Claus costumes. Play tells the story of a young girl named Nell Norton and her friends at an all-girls school hatching a scheme to sneak out on Halloween and visit Sleepy Hollow to see some ghosts. Boys from a nearby all-boys school, not allowed to go to the festivities due to a prank the earlier year, learn about the girl's plan and decide to try and scare them by dressing up like ghosts, pretending to capture them, then appearing as famous figures like Rip Van Winkle, Napoleon, and Ichabod Crane. However, Nell and her friend Gloria, while frightened by the fake kidnapping, have fun meeting these ghosts and are disappointed when they must leave. The play ends with the boys taking off their costumes and admitting that Nell and Gloria may have fallen for their trick, but it wouldn't be long before the girls found them out - as one admits, "our humiliation will equal their fright". With obvious admiration for Nell and the girls, they agree that it was all worth it to "clash wits with girls of their caliber". Measures 7 1/4" x 5"..

Simon Two Letters from a Mother to Her Child, with integrated naive drawings, August 1929. .Boston MA.10806
Price: $95.00

Two whimsical letters from a mother to one of her two daughters, Elizabeth Simon (nicknamed Betty). The first letter mentions a visit to their cousin Ruth, who has two cats on her roof. The missive continues on asking her how here hay fever is doing and if she has had anytime to play with the kitten next door. Lastly it mentions the mother has been so busy that morning that even though it is 11 AM, she still hasn't had time to fix her hair. The letter is embellished with four pen and ink drawing- two cats on a roof of house, little girl playing with cats, four children riding on a horse, and two children playing in the water. The second letter is longer than the first. It starts with the mother telling Betty that she has been feeling better lately, though her hip is hurting her pretty badly so she will most likely stop riding soon. It discusses a visit from their Aunt and a picnic lunch she had a Lake Waldon. There she watched several children on a water slide. She then inquires after what Betty has been doing in her spare time and if she has any stories to share, such as a stubbed toe perhaps or a bee landed on her nose? It ends with the hope that Betty will borrow her sister's, Barbara's, water wings to help her float.  In-text drawings of  a water slide, a child landing in the water, and presumably Betty with a bee on her nose. Measures 5 1/4" x 3 1/4" (folded card) . The envelope is toned due to age and the letters themselves some minor soiling, otherwise fine.

Scrap Book Album of Russell Roosen, Bridge Player from Detroit, Michigan, 1927-1945. Educational Press, Inc.New York.1950
Scrap Book Album of Russell Roosen, Bridge Player from Detroit, Michigan, 1927-1945. Educational Press, Inc.New York.1950
Price: $225.00

Russell W Roosen was an expert bridge player from Detroit, Michigan. He competed professionally in the game as well as taught classes and gave lectures at the local country clubs.  This album is a scrap book, filled with newspaper clippings and other memorabilia. Throughout the late 1920s and 1930s Russell Roosen was a champion bridge player that competed on the national level. The majority of the newspaper clippings are from this time and feature a variety descriptions of the games he played. In addition to the clippings, there are several flyers and promotional materials from when he began teaching bridge classes. Roosen was even sent on a cruise to the  Thousand Islands where he taught bridge on the ship. When the war broke out, Roosen enlisted in the Army. At this point the album shifts to a record of his time as a Private in the Army serving in the Pacific Ocean Theater during WWII. The majority of items included from this time are local Detroit clippings that mention him, photographs from his Army days and a few pieces of correspondence. One of which was sent to him by a  member of the Detroit Free Press which starts off stating, "Your most interesting letter, with perhaps the most interesting section riddled by censor, got in this morning..." Another funny tit bit comes from a newspaper clipping which talks about the trouble Roosen almost got into by describing himself on an Army questionnaire as a "bridge expert". His superior officer, at hearing that he was a "bridge expert" mistakenly thought he meant an expert in bridge construction and he was promptly assigned to guard a bridge. The article ends with "If he is as good a bridge tender as he is a bridge player, the officer made no mistake." A the end of the book is a letter, mechanically signed by President Harry Truman, thanking Roosen for his service. Red covers, with a stamped border design, and the name "Russell Roosen" gilded on the front cover. Approximately 50 pages of the scrap book is filled with ephemera. The materials within the scrap book date from 1927 to the mid 1940s, however the scrap book itself is from 1950 and as such the album must have been assembled after 1950. The book was published by the Educational Press, Inc, from New York and was 'size B' from their "Book Shelf Scrap Book and Album" collection.  11 3/4" x 9 1/2". Russell W. Roosen was born on May 15, 1908 in Detroit, Michigan to Peter (1994-?) and Elsie (1889- ?)  Roosen. He had one sister, Gladys Roosen (1907- ?). Russell became an extremely proficient bridge player at a young age, eventually becoming the bridge columnist for the Detroit Free Press for over twelve years. He was a five-time winner of the MBA's (Michigan Bridge Association Stein Trophy, and he managed several local bridge clubs, including Knickerbockers and the Metro for 25 years. He was also a nationally known composer of bridge problems, and he invented the diagrammed deal as a way of illustrating all the cards in a single diagram. When he moved to Connecticut with his wife, Jeanne, in 1985 the MBA named a tournament after him. Russell died in New Haven CT, in March 1995, he was 86 years old and at the time of his death was an Alzheimer's patient.

Joanne O'Neil Naive Watercolor - High Class Brothel Disguised as Elegant Boarding House. ..1930s-1940s
Price: $650.00

A 12 1/2" x 19" watercolor that at first appearance gives the impression of an elegant rooming house for young women.  Well appointed with refined furnishing of the day, various wall papers and decorative area rugs.  But wait, do salacious women lounge on the carpet in slinky streamline revealing clothing or stand around on the carpet poised wearing feather boas and with long handled  cigarettes holders; maybe not. Also note the gentleman cozily seated on the sofa hands have disappeared into the flowing robe of his companion. Finally the woman either descending or about to ascend the stairs attired in a revealing outfit with slit to the thigh  is accompanied by a tuxedoed dude observing her approvingly.  Good color composition and perspective and a charming style that allows the viewer to determine the scene..

Carol Binkett Original Art - The Big Drawing Book Consisting of 72 Pencil and Crayon Drawings By Carol Binkett - Grades 2-7. .Carbondale PA area.1940s
Price: $2,800.00

Seventy-two (72) Pencil and crayon elaborate and detailed drawings by a young girl, who appears to have a very large family.  No detail is too small for this young artist beginning with the title page "The Big Drawing Book by Carol Binkett. Each letter is colored with a different color crayon. From her first chaotic drawing titled "The Color Family" that includes 13 children in a kitchen - scenes such as a boy atop a dish cabinet (filled with multi-colored dishes) His clothing and the vase are one color and the flowers are another. The three (3) girls putting away dishes have stacks of plates and cups all in different colors.  Beyond the color, all of the children are working cooperatively and smiling. The art is naive and remains that way with only minimal improvement as she ages, but the degree of detail and story sequences built into each drawing is of particular note. Subject matter crosses a variety of areas from holidays and sporting events to lessons in etiquette and morality.  A majority of the scenes feature predominantly girls and often have a sign "No Boys Allowed". Beginning in the third grade multiple scenes or panels are introduced to tell a progressive story.  The most detailed pages include 12 panels.  Carol appears to be dyslexic with backwards letters strewn throughout.  Misspellings are frequent and have been annotated in italics. The titles of the drawings follow With far too much content to discuss click HERE for a detailed overview of the images. The drawings in grades 2-6 are numbers, several pages are lacking.  Drawings are on both the front and back of the pages. Pages measure 9" x 12" .  To view images click: .
