In the article "Cheerful Women", it states "Despondency is a thing of evil results. Worry produces nothing but wrinkles and wretchedness ... Don't worry. Worry is the greatest foe to the happiness of any household. An anxious, despondent face, a fretful, complaining voice will make every one uncomfortable. Miniature book. John Gregory was an eighteenth-century Scottish physician, medical writer and moralist. When his wife died in 1761, he wrote "A Father's Legacy to His Daughters". It was meant as a way to honor his wife's memory and record her thoughts on female education so that their three daughters would still feel the influence of their mother in the lives. While it was originally never intended to be viewed by anyone outside the family, after Gregory's death, his son James published it in 1774. The text advises parents and women on religion, moral conduct, friendship and interactions with men, with a focus on marriage. Indeed nearly three-fourths of the book are on marriage. The last section is entitled "The Study of History Recommended to Ladies" and it is an excerpt from an essay written by David Hume original entitled "Of the Study of History". The book was widely considered a success, even though it also had it staunch critic. In the book, Gregory suggested a woman should "refrain from exposing any learning that they might have, as this would damage their ability to attract a husband." Mary Wollstonecraft, an English writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights would later attack these principles in her own book, "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" published in 1792. She argued that Gregory's advice amounted to nothing more than deceit on the part of women and that women are not naturally inferior to men, but appear to be only because they lack education. .
