München: Braun & Schneider, c. 1880's. Includes eight (8) hand-colored movable plates and nine (9) pages of text for this classic of paper engineering. The text on the facing page tells the story of the plate. Each page has a number of moving parts joined with coiled wire to allow the "picture to move". The plates are: Die Gouvernante (The Governess); Die Billardspieler (The Billards Player); Die Schmetterlingsfanger (The Butterfly Catcher); Der vergessene Hausschlüssel (The Forgotten Housekey); Der Gratulant (The Well-Wisher); Der durstige Kasperl; (The Thirsty Punch [and Judy]); Der gesangene Turko (The Singing Turk); Der Äpfeldieb (The Apple Thief). Meggendorfer was the inventor of this genre and by most standards still considered the best. c1880s. Condition: moderate wear throughout. Bends to base of cover. Two tabs have been replaced -- Der durstige Kasperl, one with a replaced tab has a minor functional defect - the menu doesn't retract without manual assistance (could most likley be repaired). The butterfly net is missing from Die Schmetterlingsfanger. Otherwise complete and functional. Measures 12 3/'4" x 9 1/2".
