Ladies costumes in the 1890's usually consisted of a dress with fitted bodice, puffed sleeves and a full length A-line skirt. The gowns tended towards the ornate with lace ornamentation, contrasting trims, etc. All types of fabrics were used from very heavy velvet to silk chiffon. The gowns were transitioning from the truly elaborate Victorian to the more streamline Edwardian.
